The M230 Chain Gun is an American 30mm autocannon, the first prototypes of which appeared in the first half of the 1970s and entered service with the US armed forces in 1983 and remains in service today. The total weight of the weapon is 59.5 kg with a total length of 2.18 meters. The initial velocity of the projectile fired from this weapon is up to 805 m / s, and the effective shot range is about 1500 m, with a maximum range of 4000 meters. The M230 Chain Gun was developed by Hughes Helicopters (later part of the McDonnell-Douglas concern, and now[od 2018 r.] Northrop-Grumman), as the successor to the M50 20mm cannon. It was relatively quickly assumed that the new cannon would have an external (electric) power source and would be powered from an ammunition belt. Both of these elements significantly influenced the firepower and rate of fire. The weapon is known primarily for mounting virtually all versions on AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, on which it is one of the main tools in the fight against enemy armored vehicles. The cannon can fire both low-mass native production ammunition (projectiles: M788, M789 and M799), as well as ADEN / DEFA ammunition 30 x 113.
